Welcome to 1831
Lumberjack life was simple in 1831. Let’s keep it simple now.
Our beard products were inspired by the grit and determination of Canadian men, first described as “Lumberjacks”, in 1831. The stereotypically plaid wearing, bearded labourers lent their aesthetic to many a modern man. Men such as myself.
Doom and Groom
Having a beard is simultaneously rewarding and frustrating. I love the look, but don’t always like the way my skin and beard feel. This is exactly what led me to create this product.
The journey to creating 1831 started like most things in my life – with a problem I was experiencing. I had a Duck Dynasty worthy beard, but was struggling with the dreaded “beardruff”. Dandruff from my beard.
This was a first for me, so I did what we all do with the convenience of a smart phone in our pockets: I researched.
Figuring out the cause: Enlightening. Easy.
When your hair doesn’t have the nutrients it needs, it steals them from your skin, leaving the skin underneath dry and flaky.
Finding a solution: Perplexing. Disappointing.
Reading labels of and testing out beard products is overwhelming. What are these ingredients? What do they do? How do you pronounce them? Why are there so many? Why is it so thick? What is with the fragrance? Why is it so gritty or greasy?
Creating a solution: Real. Smooth.
1831 produces high quality beard products that smooth your skin and hair, and is made from 7 real ingredients:
Shea butter.
Coconut oil.
Argan oil.
Jojoba oil.
Bees wax.
Emulsifying wax.
Essential oils for fragrance (in some)
These products have been selected based on their compatibility with one another and the benefits they have for both hair and skin.
Shea butter is great for hair and more importantly the skin below. It’s easily absorbed by both and is filled with healthy nutrients to keep both moisturized throughout the day. This is the base of all 1831 butters and balms. Like Canadian temperatures fluctuate, it’s consistency can change, but when applied using the 1831 method, it’s as smooth as can be.
Coconut oil is a natural healing oil. Along with keeping your skin moisturized, it helps reduce itching and irritation that can come with having a beard. Coconut oil also carries anti-microbial properties which help treat acne and harmful bacteria.
Argan oil. The holy grail of skin care oils. Along with moisturizing the skin, it has been known to reduce the skin’s appearance of aging. It is absorbed easily by the hair and helps keep the hair strong, preventing breakage along with helping tame frizz or flyaways.
Jojoba oil is the closest oil to what our body naturally produces. This makes it easily absorbed by skin and hair and acts as a barrier to protect both skin and hair. Its anti -inflammatory properties make it great for reducing itch and irritation.
Beeswax is used for control. Having a beard is great, but if it’s left unchecked, it can look unkept and be unmanageable. Beeswax binds well with all the other molecules in our balms and butters, allowing you to decide how much control you want.
Emulsifying wax is a complete game changer. Beard product is generally applied right after a shower. The emulsifying wax works to bind the other ingredients with the water allowing everything to work together. Water is great for distributing product in any hair.
Designed for you
1831 beard products are available to help you look and feel your best. I’ve created a solution that works for me in a way that no other product could achieve, but just as the lumberjacks lived in camps and worked in crews, I want to support our community of #beardsmen – sharing the solution for a better, bearded future. #RealSmooth1831
